General Information

BACKGROUND / HISTORY

The Home Savings and Loan Company, a subsidiary of United Community Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: UCFC), is a full-service community bank headquartered in Youngstown, Ohio. Founded on January 15, 1889 by James M. McKay, Home Savings has maintained a strong commitment to the communities it serves by cultivating relationships with local residents, businesses and community service organizations. In 1998, Home Savings underwent a mutual-to-stock conversion to form its holding company, United Community, enabling the pursuit of opportunities for corporate growth and product diversity.

Home Savings continues to succeed with its long-term strategic plan of growing through geographic expansion and product diversity. In January of 2006, it opened its newest full-service banking office in Streetsboro, Ohio, bringing the total number of branches to 37. "When entering new markets, we realize the importance of not only offering a wide array of financial products," said David G. Lodge, Home Savings President and COO, "but also providing personalized service at a level that differentiates us from the competition."

Home Savings has continually earned market leadership due to its ability to consistently meet and exceed the expectations and financial needs of its customers. Its employees remain dedicated to providing their customers with competitive products and exceptional service, as well as the most current banking technology available.

In addition to its traditional branch network, Home Savings continues to provide customers with convenient alternative banking systems, such as online and telephone banking. These systems allow customers to pay bills, transfer funds and monitor account balances 24 hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the world by visiting www.homesavings.com or by calling 330-747-HOME (4663) or toll free at 1-888-999-4707. Home Savings also offers free, unlimited bill payment services by phone or online.

One of Home Savings' greatest strengths remains its history of commitment to the communities it serves. Home Savings has always maintained a strong presence in a variety of service organizations, charitable causes and public efforts. Our employees are active members of civic groups, economic development programs, educational projects and urban revitalization efforts. To strengthen its positive impact within the community, Home Savings established its Charitable Foundation, which focuses on contributions in the areas of education, health care and disadvantaged children and adults. The Foundation has contributed millions of dollars to non-profit organizations throughout Home Savings' market areas.

With assets of $2.6 billion, Home Savings operates 37 banking offices and six loan production offices throughout Ohio and western Pennsylvania, employing nearly 700 people. Home Savings was recently recognized as "One of the Best Places to Work in Northeast Ohio" by the Employers Resource Council.
